Overhead Line Equipment Construction 1 (OLEC 1)



This course provides delegates with a basic understanding of OLE Systems, enabling them to enter an Overhead Line construction site. OLEC courses are mandatory for all delegates that work or wish to work on Network Rail Overhead Line equipment.

Throughout the duration of this course, delegates will learn a basic understanding of documentation, design drawings (including Cross Sections and Lay Outs and Reporting. Delegates will also gain a basic understanding of Installation Methods and Techniques, an understanding of general safety (including Radial Loads and Working at Heights) and a basic use of hand tools.



At the end of this training, delegates will be able to;

  • Explain the limits of their authority while in an OLE construction site
  • Give a brief description of the main component parts of the OLE infrastructure
  • Describe the main hazards and risks associated with the OLE construction sites and activities
  • Follow the safe access procedure
  • Comply with health and safety regulations associated with working in an OLE construction site
  • Complete relevant records and pass them on to the appropriate person
  • Follow recording and reporting procedures


Course Award

Delegates will be awarded with a Network Rail approved qualification upon successful completion of this course and through theory and practical assessment. Continuous personal development will take place.


Entry Requirements

Delegates must hold a valid PTS.

  • Personal Protective equipment (PPE)
  • Hand tools if issued



Delegates who successfully pass this course are able to undertake OLEC 2 training in order to gain a greater competence when working with Overhead Lines.
